Films take place on Wednesdays at 7pm in Gallagher Theatre\, and each screening is followed by a guest speaker. All films are free. This documentary includes provocative interviews with professionals and outreach members who are active in this community to help shed light on a very controversial matter. This film breaks through the gender stereotypes and historical gender ideologies to liberate our bodies\, minds and spirits from our own social Gender Dysphoria. SUMMARY:Queer Film Series: "(A)sexual"
DESCRIPTION:The Queer Film Series is a monthly film series featuring documentaries about the lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Films take place on Wednesdays at 7pm in Gallagher Theatre\, and each screening is followed by a guest speaker. All films are free. Facing a sex obsessed culture\, a mountain of stereotypes and misconceptions\, and a lack of social or scientific research\, asexuals – people who experience no sexual attraction—struggle to claim their identity. (A)sexual follows the growth of a community that experiences no sexual attraction. In 2000\, David Jay came out to his parents. He was asexual and was fine with it. And he was not alone. Studies show that 1% of the population is asexual. But in a society obsessed with sex\, how do you deal with life as an outsider? Combining intimate interviews\, verite footage\, and animation with fearless humor and pop culture imagery\, David and our four other characters grapple with this universal question and the outcomes might surprise you.

Films take place on Wednesdays at 7pm in Gallagher Theatre\, and each screening is followed by a guest speaker. All films are free. The Oscar-nominated documentary We Were Here documents the coming of what was called the “Gay Plague” in the early 1980s. It offers a cathartic validation for the generation that suffered through\, and responded to\, the onset of AIDS. It opens a window of understanding to those who have only the vaguest notions of what transpired in those years. Films take place on Wednesdays at 7pm in Gallagher Theatre\, and each screening is followed by a guest speaker. All films are free. The iron curtain between gay and straight culture is crumbling. SUMMARY:PrideLaw Clinic
DESCRIPTION:University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law's PrideLaw and Students of Arizona Health Law Organization to offer an Advance Directives Clinic at Wingspan! On Saturday\, February 25\, 2012\, from 11am-2pm\, law students from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona will be at Wingspan to assist members of the community in filling out Advanced Directives paperwork that will allow persons and couples to designate how decisions are made about care in the event of incapacitation and who is authorized to make those decisions. Also\, information will be available on how to register your wishes on a statewide registry that will allow doctors and medical facilities to access this information as quickly as possible in emergency situations. Students will not be authorized to answer any legal questions or provide any legal advice\, solely to assist in the completion of the paperwork and guidance on how/where to record it. However\, there will be licensed attorneys on hand should legal questions arise in the course of filling out the paperwork. Pride Law and SAHLO are excited to provide this service to members of the LGBTQ community who do otherwise do not have a legal protection to determine who will make medical decisions for them in emergency situations\, or sometimes to even have their partner/loved allowed into a hospital room to visit them. Since the paperwork\, although readily available\, is not easy to find\, our goal is to provide a central space where couples and individuals can come and fill out the paperwork. For questions\, please contact: Nathan Wade at nwade@email.arizona.edu\, Brandy Levine at bwelz@email.arizona.edu\, or Sky Colavito at colavitr@email.arizona.edu.

SUMMARY:FUR REAL Bear Ball
DESCRIPTION:The big Bear weekend (La Fiesta de Los Osos) is here and the Bears of the Old Pueblo are putting together a great dance; FUR REAL on Saturday\, January 14\, that’s a fund-raiser for Wingspan. It’s preceded at 9pm by our (in)famous and somewhat bawdy ‘Fiesta Bear Contest’ which is a total parody on the more serious bear beauty pageants out there and a lot of fun! The ‘winner’ is crowned through the crowd’s votes (money that they collect during the final round) so it’s also a way to generate even more cash for Wingspan! At FUR REAL we’ve got DJ David Biehl from the world-famous ‘Tidal Wave’ parties in Orlando spinning from 10pm-2am and this man is used to making a crowd of 1000 move so it’s gonna be hot! Special thanks to our wonderful partners at SAAF/MSHAPE for the use of their lighting and sound system and for providing our attendees with condoms\, lube\, and safer sex materials! The doors open at 9pm for the contest and then it melds right into the dance after a short setup-interlude. (21+/ID required) with 100% of the door going to the Wingspan General Fund Check us out on our Facebook event page https://www.facebook.com/events/276486759031171/!

SUMMARY:Quinn McDonald Presents Raw Art Journaling
DESCRIPTION:Phoenix artist Quinn McDonald will discuss her new book and lead a hands-on exercise in making raw art. Raw Art Journaling contains more than a dozen step-by-step exercises that use drawing\, painting\, found poetry\, photography and journaling prompts to develop a raw art journal. Quinn believes that people often give up on art because the result on paper doesn’t look like it does in “real life.” In contrast\, drawing from one’s imagination is very satisfying because an emotion or idea—not an object—is being expressed. Participants will design a permission slip to make their own raw art—permission to set aside time to explore\, to make mistakes\, to create intuitively.

SUMMARY:Kate Bernheimer & Lydia Millet
DESCRIPTION:Fantastic Women comprises eighteen stories by some of the most exciting contemporary women writers in the United States. These inventive\, insightful authors steep their narratives in a heady potion of surrealism and macabre black comedy. The resulting wildly creative work captures potent truths about human nature far more clearly than much of the fiction (or\, for that matter\, the nonfiction) being written today. Tonight\, we are privileged to have two contributors read from the book. Kate Bernheimer is the editor of the popular collection\, My Mother She Killed Me\, My Father He Ate Me. Lydia Millet was nominated for the Pulitzer prize for her story collection\, Love In Infant Monkeys.

SUMMARY:Christopher McIlroy, Here I Am a Writer
DESCRIPTION:The stories and poems in Here I Am a Writer were written by Native American students and compiled by teacher Christopher "Kit" McIlroy\, one of the founders of ArtsReach\, a nonprofit Arizona program designed to tap the talents of Native American writers. A decade or more after these pieces were written\, McIlroy went in search of the young writers who had opened their hearts in his classes\, to see how they had fared in the intervening years and if they were still writing at all. He chronicles both his own journey of discovery and theirs. We are fortunate to have McIlroy and one of his former students\, Josie Frye\, discuss Here I Am a Writer.

SUMMARY:Open call: Anthology of Trans and Genderqueer Poetry
DESCRIPTION:We are creating an anthology of the best poems out there by trans and genderqueer writers\, and we would love to include your work in the book. While this project exists in a historical context of several important anthologies that gather marginalized and underrepresented writers (This Bridge Called My Back\, No More Masks\, The World in Us\, Premonitions\, The Open Boat\, etc.)\, this will be the first anthology to foreground the poetic writings of trans and genderqueer authors. We are seeking writing that makes us wet our panties a little bit and wonder what the f*** have we been doing with our lives all this time. Subject matter and/or content is open - you do not need to send us only poems about gender (although you may). One thing that makes this anthology unique is that it will include a statement on poetics by each participant\, along with your poems. This is a chance for you to tell us something about your writing process\, writing practice\, theory of life or whatever you like. The anthology is edited by TC Tolbert and Tim Peterson (Trace) \, both trans-identified poets. It will be published by EOAGH Books in early 2012\, and you can bet it will be widely distributed! We encourage submissions by people of color\, people with disabilities\, people educated by life or school or some of both or neither\, people with no publications or a gazillion. The book will feature 7-10 pages of work from approximately 35 poets and we hope you will be one of them! Deadline for submissions: November 30 What to submit: 7-10 pages of poetry and a prose "poetics" statement (see website: www.transanthology.com) Where to submit: e-mail us at transanthology@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Miss Representation screening at the Loft
DESCRIPTION:Are you hungry for media images of strong\, powerful female leadership? Are you looking for ways to protect yourself and your kids from mass media images that starve us of inspiration and drown us in sexuality and violence? A powerful documentary that asks the tough questions – and a special guest who provides insightful answers. An exclusive viewing of Miss Representation\, a documentary featured at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Special guest speaker Dr. Jean Kilbourne\, featured in the documentary\, author of "So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect their Kids." The film examines the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America\, and challenges the media’s limited portrayal of what it means to be a powerful woman. Hear what LGBT icons like Rachel Maddow and Margaret Cho have to say on the topic. Dr. Kilbourne’s work analyzes the flip side of the coin: the over-representation in the media of sexy images that are toxic for girls and boys. $10 individual ticket

SUMMARY:Call to Artists: Manhood
DESCRIPTION:Manhood is traditionally defined with a combination of qualities such as courage\, virility\, determination and vigor. Fluxx Studio & Gallery is seeking to fill its walls with artworks showing how the 21st century describes manhood. Work Media/Work Size: Although there is no media/size limit\, submitted artworks must be able to hang on a wall. Participants can submit up to 3 works\, images must be in jpeg format at 72 dpi. Images should be labeled with the artist name\, title\, size\, and year. Submissions Due: August 22nd (Accepted Artwork must be wired and ready to hang) The submission fee is $5. SUMMARY:Queer Film Series: Cruel and Unusual
DESCRIPTION:Most states separate prisoners by genitalia alone\, so pre-op\, transgender women are placed in men’s correctional facilities where they find themselves preyed upon and vulnerable to sexual violence. Cruel and Unusual follows the lives of five transgender women inside and outside different correctional facilities in the US. This frank\, and often unsettling\, documentary portrays the challenges faced by these women. The women’s stories are interwoven with commentary by lawyers and prison custodians who discuss the problems transgender inmates face; chief among them is the authorities’ complete refusal to recognize Gender Identity Disorder as a legitimate medical condition. Disturbing evidence suggests that thirty percent of all transgender people have been imprisoned —three times the national average. Eye-opening and caustic in its depiction of the blatant discrimination transgender people endure\, this documentary will leave you with much to think about. The Queer Film Series is a monthly film series featuring documentaries about the lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Films take place on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm in Gallagher Theatre\, and each screening is followed by a guest speaker. SUMMARY:Lesbain Looks Presents "The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls"
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival\, The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls tells the story of the world’s only comedic\, singing\, yodelling lesbian twin sisters\, Lynda and Jools Topp\, whose political activism and unique brand of entertainment has helped change New Zealand’s social landscape. The Topp Twins break down barriers as often as they break into song\, and in the process\, they have become well-loved cultural icons. The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls is a big story. It’s not just the story of two sisters but also of 50 years of New Zealand history. Half a century of cultural changes and the foundation of a national identity. Part concept film\, part biopic\, part historical record\, part comedy and part musical extravaganza\, the Twins share their journey from “coming out‟ to Jools' recent brush with Breast Cancer with much laughter\, honesty and wisdom. It's a hilarious\, toe-tapping and ultimately touching film about two truly unique New Zealanders which ends up saying as much about us as it does about them.
