This free Community Showing of Project Visibility, will be held at the Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Rd., on Nov. 8, 10-11:30. It will be co-sponsored by PCOA, Wingspan Senior Pride, and the LGBT Jewish Inclusion Project.

Four out of five LGBT elders say they don’t trust the health-care system. 50% of nursing home workers surveyed said their fellow workers would be intolerant of LGBT people. And LGBT older adults are five times less likely to access senior services.

As part of the solution to these problems, Project Visibility provides a training to help service providers become more informed, sensitive to, and supportive of the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender older adults and their families. It was developed by Boulder County Aging Services, and has received awards from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging and the National Association of Counties.

Pima Council on Aging, in collaboration with Wingspan Senior Pride and other community agencies, offers this cultural competency training for staff at assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and home health agencies, to increase awareness of the strengths and needs of LGBT older adults.

We are offering a free community showing of the Project Visibility Film, which features personal interviews with older LGBT adults who have faced discrimination during their lives, or who have fears of poor treatment if they need to use care facilities. The showing will present the training as it is given to staff at care facilities, including a manual on making positive and practical changes within agencies. Please join us for this presentation and help get the word out about this training. Our goal is to help our community’s service providers ensure that older LGBT adults receive care services that are welcoming, respectful, and safe for them. We hope to inspire caregivers and providers to request Project Visibility trainings in their facilities or agencies, which PCOA and our community collaboration can provide free of charge.
